About ASU Centers for Sustainable Development

From the onset, the Applied Science Private University (ASU) recognized the importance and benefits of aligning its operational and educational activities with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The commitment to the UN SDGs started to become more organized when ASU formed its Sustainable Development Steering Committee (SDSC) in 2018 with the main task to map the UN SDGs into the existing ‘business-as-usual’ activities of the university, and to also support the future-plans of integrating the SDGs as a framework for ASU’s strategic planning. Throughout its journey, and long before the emergence of the UN SDGs, ASU established a wide range of training and education centers, known as ASU Centers, to support its mission in contributing to the social, economic and environmental development of the country and the region.


To integrate the concepts of Sustainable Development in the university’s daily transactions and long-term planning leading to create meaningful policies and practices that will contribute to the achievement of the United Nations SDGs

To ensure that the university’s entire system supports participatory bodies that recognize and engage local stakeholders, including employees, students, residents, government and local civil society representatives.

To develop a sustainable university environment that targets sustainability in: financial resources, operation and management of physical resources, water and energy resources, recycling of waste, and greening of campus and local community environment.

Teaching and Learning

To provide sustainable educational opportunities and resources such as; current programs, modern facilities, and distinguished faculty members, to support the teaching and learning of the university students.

Research and Development

To generate new knowledge and expertise by expanding and promoting research and development in areas that address sustainable development across the university and the community.

Partnership and Internationalization

To prepare the university and promote it as a destination for learning, teaching and research for international students and faculties.

To attract students who possess the qualities and capabilities to benefit from the university experience, and become a committed and responsible citizen with attributes that are relevant for future workplace and meet the demands of the employers.

Renewable Energy Center

Applied Science Private University Renewable Energy Center was established in 1996 for research purposes that carried out by the university's academic staff and students, and also to follow up the new technology in energy field especially renewable energy which it's now capture the attention of all countries all around the world.

In 2013 the university has established the first commercial scale PV system which consiste of:
1. On grid 500 kw which covers the top of the faculty of Engineering building, student affairs deanship building and the library building
2-Test Field system of 58 kWp Grid connected for research purposes

Why the Consulting and Training Center?
It is because the consulting and training center in ASU is eager to provide the lasting and encouraging environment in the terms of theory or practice, and so, this was the objective and the main motive to which the idea of the center has come. The center has been equipped with the most recent means of education both in its theoretical and practical form.

It has been embodied through preparing the halls with the most advanced methods of modern education, the practical labs have been equipped with the latest devices and program versions, in addition to having well qualified and experienced trainers within the training field. And the use of a modern system and regularly amending it, as well as improving study plans according to the requirements of the current labor market.

The Faculty Development Center was established in Applied Science Private University according to the deans' council decision number 7/2006 which was taken in 2006 with the aim of fulfilling the university's goal in achieving excellence and developing the academic and professional process. This goal also serves the community and enriches the skills of the academic faculty members where the center assures the quality of education and scientific research through training programs that play a vital role in enhancing and developing the performance level of the academic faculty members.

The Computer Center is one of the most important technical offices in the university. It forms the information window to the university by offering numerous services which help in decision making in the faculties, departments and offices of the university.
The center is located in Ibnu Khaldoon Building on the campus center, which gives it the benefit of easy connection of different networks to the sites of faculties, departments and offices.

Iqraa institute is specialized in teaching Arabic language to Non-native speakers. The institute was established in the Applied Science University to fulfill its vision and message of spreading science and knowledge and enhancing the status of Arabic language globally.

Cadaveric Microanatomy Laboratory

Since 2008, the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (WFNS), has recognized Ibn Al-Haytham Hospital as a world training center (class B). We have already, under the auspices of WFNS, trained tens of neurosurgeons and neurosurgical residents from all over the world. In developed countries, a cadaveric lab is considered a necessary step in the process of continuous medical education.
We are proud to inform you that we have established the first cadaveric laboratory in the Middle East, which will make our center a (Class A ) training center, one among few of its kind, around the World. The cadaveric lab is 537 square meters, fitted with durable flooring, state of the art ventilation, temperature regulation with doors, walls and cabins made of stainless steel.

Daycare Center

The Applied Science Private University's Daycare Center was founded on 1-1-2015 with the aim of providing high quality daycare services for the university's employees and students' children. The university adopted this act in accordance with article 72 of the labor law, which states the importance of providing Daycare centers in the private and public sector institutions.

Currently, around thirty children of ages between two months to four years are benefiting from this service, while it is planned to host up to fifty children. The Daycare center also provides an individual care program which caters to the needs of every child. In addition, it provides group-based activities for small groups and large groups of students.

Green Environment Strategy

The university aims to operate towards sustainable environment campus by optimizing all forms of production and consumption. For that reason, ASU has adopted the following three key performance indicators (KPIs) under the Green Environment initiative:

  • KPI-ENV1: Reduce the water consumption by 30%
  • Efficient monitoring for water leaks.
    Implementing efficient rainwater harvesting and graywater treatment systems for all buildings.
  • KPI-ENV2: Increase the amount of recycled waste to 80% of the waste produced.
  • Efficient collection and separation of waste through a third-party.
    Organize a university-wide, biannual students driven awareness campaigns.
    Minimize purchases and usage of disposables.
  • KPI-ENV3: Achieve scope 2 Emission by 2030
  • Monitor and maintain the existing 0.5 MWp PV generation system in excellent operating conditions.
    Expedite the construction and the commissioning of the proposed 6 MWp PV system.

Water Conservation Program

ASU campus water use efficiency
Reducing water consumption and protecting water quality are key objectives in sustainable buildings. Therefore, at Applied Science Private University, many projects have been developed to sustain all natural available resources and enhance the recycle of natural resources. For instance, grey water and harvested rooftops rain water have been one of the most successful projects in study and implementation phases. That is, harvested rooftops water is collected where an average monthly volume of harvested rooftops water is 365 m3.
In this project, rooftop rain water was collected, treated, and quality tested before and after treatment by on-site treatment lab.

Waste Management & Recycling Program

Recycling Program
In accordance with the University's mission and its commitment to continuous improvement of the campus environment and sustainability, the Civil Engineering department established two main environmental projects the past three years that are aimed to control the environmental impacts of the campus and contribute to a national quest for conserving scarce resources.
In 2018, a small-scale greywater project started assessing the volumes and quality of greywater from one of the student's bathrooms in the Engineering building.
The project's main goal was to evaluate the feasibility of installing greywater collection systems to all of the University's bathrooms for later irrigation usage and to calculate the overall savings in fresh water consumption.
A second stage of the greywater project is expected to start by the beginning of the year 2022, where greywater will be collected from all bathrooms within the university buildings for the irrigation purposes.
